Summary: Peripatetic publisher/editor, author of six pretty good books for mainstream houses, columnist for major dailies and weeklies, a mighty fine salesman and publicist, Zen meditation instructor, idea hamster, loyal, gutsy, driven, and my dotcom didn't implode.

Experience

Travel Correspondent, Playboy.com

Each month delivered 25,000 words of edit, including 40 hot spots, four people profiles, two travelogues, 100 scanned photos, and four digitized audios. Interview subjects included State Department spokesperson James Rubin, author Andrei Codrescu, San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, and dozens of frisky women. Invited to The Mansion. Met Hef.

Cofounder and Editor, Monk Magazine

Lived on the road in a Ford Econoline van and then a Fleetwood Bounder motorhome ("the Monkmobile") publishing Monk, the world's only mobile magazine. With fellow "Monk," Michael Lane, pioneered "dashboard publishing," the "perzine," and, according to Portable Computing Magazine, "the mobile office."

Chief contributor and editorial director of the 40,000 circulation quarterly, including online incarnation at www.monk.com. Interviews included the late Kurt Cobain, film director Gus Van Sant, Massachusetts governor Bill Weld, basketball legend Robert "Chief" Parrish, eccentric millionaire Stanley Marsh III, musician Nanci Griffith, and "post-porn modernist" Annie Sprinkle.

Additional editorial duties included copy editing, research, and fact-checking.

Publisher and Marketing Director, Monk Magazine

Generated all Monk PR, netting coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, USA Today, Brutus (Japan), Der Stern (Germany), Wired, on ABC's Good Morning America, Fox News, the BBC, CNN, MTV, NPR's Morning Edition and Whadda Ya Know?, CBS's Street Stories, and hundreds more.

Sold advertising space, mostly from public pay phones, to top-tier national brands such as Absolut Vodka, Bombay Gin, Grand Marnier, Fodor's, Virgin, Capitol, Motown, Viking-Penguin, Sony, Warner Records, Tower, Elektra, HarperCollins, AOL, Polygram, Arista, Geffen, Joe Boxer, as well as hundreds of smaller back-of-the book ads to mail order companies, mom-and-pop businesses, and independent media.

Managed 5000-name lead database.

Oversaw production and design of all marketing materials.

Cofounder and Marketing Director, Monk Media (www.MonkMedia.net)

Managed an international team of writers, videographers, programmers, designers and photographers, who provided code and content to a range of publications, websites, retail stores, film production companies, and corporate clients, including Tiger Woods, American Express, Delta Airlines, Oshadi, Somnium Beds and Land's End.

Arts and Culture Critic

Articles and columns have been purchased by Harpers, Newsweek, L.A. Times, Seattle Weekly, Online Journalism Review, Trips, Santa Fe Reporter, Albuquerque Journal, Baltimore City Paper, THE, Follow the Rabbit, and Travelers Tales.

Director of Development and Media Relations, New Mexico Academy of Sciences and Mathematics

Managed a team of 20 volunteers, and a budget of $30,000, in commandeering Academy's first fundraiser, netting $38,000 for its generous financial aid program.

In close consultation with president, worked with entire faculty to fine-tune, edit, and post the Academy curriculum to Monk-designed website, www.NewMexacad.org.

Garnered first favorable feature publicity the Academy had received in its five-year history, as well as regular placements in regional media.

Near-death Experience

While hitchhiking through St. Louis, taught a psychopath how to meditate after he pulled a gun on me. Successfully diffused and transformed the situation to our mutual benefit.

Seventy-one Days of Solitude

Successfully completed the final 71 days of a 90-day silent Zen Meditation retreat, known in Korean as Kyol Che, or "hard training." No books, television, radio, writing, or any other kind of entertainment or communication were allowed. Sat, chanted, chopped wood from 4:00 AM to 10:30 PM everyday. For three nights in the middle of the retreat all participants functioned on two hours sleep.
